Engelsk summary: This article sets out to describe one of the missing components of Edward Said’s work ‘Orientalism’ (1978). This survey shows how the development of the German study of the orient was influenced by the rational theology of the enlightenment and the philological studies of the romantic period. The emergence of the professionalized science of history and the influence of the comparative study of the history of religions can be determined as the major contributions to the further development of German oriental studies after 1850. This did not, however, result in a total absence of theological and romantic themes in the study of the orient, but this development lay down the guidelines for the cultural studies by German scholars in the 20th Century. |
