Peter Seeberg
Panarabismen, Irak og den arabiske verden

Engelsk summary:

The article discusses panarabism in a 20th century Iraqi context. It claims that the historical development in Iraq in many ways can be seen as a mirror of the rise of panarabism, its realization and deroute. Arab nationalism establishes itself as a result of the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the deterriorating control over its provinces and not as mush as a result of European dominance. Arab nationalism and the Ba’ath regimes of Iraq (and Syria) pass, especially after the 1967-war between Israel and its neighbours, through a period of decay due to internal conflicts within the Arab world. The invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein in August 1990 in combination with the fact that several Arab countries joined the US-led coalition in the neutralization of Saddam forces can be seen as the definitive deroute of panarabism.
