The articles takes its point of departure in the general debate on (ir)relevance of the nation-states in a Middle Eastern context. It analyses how Jordan throughout its short history has been marked by an extensive and to some extent still going debate on where – i.e. its territorial delimitation – and what Jordan is – i.e. is it an Arab, Hashemite, Palestinian or Transjordanian state – and discusses how Jordanian domestic and foreign policy has been influenced by this debate.
