Engelsk summary: The feeling of being part of the
Lebanese nation grew stronger during the in many ways devastating civil war,
which lasted for 15 years. This is claimed by the German Lebanon-expert Theodor
Hanf. The article discusses this assumption and asserts that this is no longer
the case. The lasting domination by the Syrians, the ambitious, yet questionable
reconstruction process, the economic problems of the Lebanese state and the
marked poverty among the huge Shia-minority are all factors, which have made it
impossible to create a national consensus in postwar Lebanon. This has led to a
retribalization of Lebanese society which in stead of progress seems to bring
forward a strong reassertion of religious and confessional consciousness and has
at least for a foreseeable future made it impossible to deal with the severe
structural problems of the economy and the absurdities of Lebanese political
reality. The killing of Rafik Hariri February 14th 2005 and the
withdraval of the Syrian troops in spring 2005 has not eased these tensions. |
