Erik Christiansen
Roman Coinege and the Province of Egypt

The author describes instances of Roman coin politics in the province of Egypt. The first three (the reigns of Nero, Trajan, and Septimius Severus) are mainly based on his own book from 1988, with additions from his article in 1996. The last instance (the late 3rd century) is instigated by the recent articles by Dominic Rathbone and William Metcalf, but also declared to be a first step towards investigations of the hoards he lectured on at The XIIth International Numismatic Congress Berlin 1997 (under publication). In conclusion he does not deny the importance of coins for the Roman economy, especially commerce and trade, but contrary to the modernist view he argues that fiscal and political motives were the main reason for production of coins.
