'The Smell of Death'

In September 2000 a group of high school students went to Auschwitz as part of three months course in history and religion focused on the Holocaust, the Jews in Poland and the Second World War. The article describes how the students reflect on Holocaust before, during and after the visit. It shows in a very simple way how Holocaust is experienced among young Danish students. The students were intellectually well prepared and knew their subject well, but being in Auschwitz made them understand in a very different and emotional way. The visit was sponsored mainly by the Danish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies as a part of the educational program, that the centre is developing.
