'Spanish Comics, from Political Messages to European Integration'

The article offers a presentation of the development within the field of comics for adults in Spain in the 1970s and 1980s. With a focus on the ways in which the comics refer to Spanish society, Anne Magnussen discusses three major phases in the development of the comics. From the explicitly political comics of the late 1970s, the comics of the early 1980s abandon the explicit references to ideology of the former group and instead they question any possible norm, societal or related to fiction and genre. During the 1980s comics for adults evolve into a rather diversified field according to style as well as themes and narrative structures while approaching a more general ‘European standard of comics'.
