Globalization, Westernization and Tradition in China

The article deals with intellectual debates in China about Western ideas and the challenge they have posed to the indigenous tradition. It focuses on two diffferent periods, 1860-1920 and 1980-2000, and examines how the attempt to separate the import of Western technology from the influence of Western ideas has continued to this day. It is also shown how even the concept of globalization is conceived in terms of a China versus West dichotomy.
