Poul Porskær Poulsen:
The girl from the baker's shop and the hornblower. Outside marriage in Gødvad in the second half of the 19th century

The article treats the subject of illegitimate children and immorality in the parish of Gødvad in Central Jutland, during the period c. 1860-1890. In a number of paternity cases men have the paternity fastened on them, and in almost all cases they agree to contribute to the maintenance of the child. In some cases a certain amount of pressure and persuasion is required to gain the man's cooperation, as in the case of the hornblower who impregnated a girl in Svendborg. Paternity was also fastened on another married man, but he was let off lightly, because the accuser was a woman of blemished reputation. Research into parish registers has shown that more illegitimate children were born than is reflected by the number of paternity cases, which indicates that settlements were made at the local level. The article concludes with an account of immorality in Gødvad, where several unmarried couples lived together - a kind of conduct which the local community had taken no measures against, but which had to provoke a reaction from the evangelical vicar.
